The Catholic School
“The Catholic school, far more than any other, must be a community whose aim is the transmission of values for living. Its work is seen as promoting a faith-relationship with Christ in Whom all values find fulfillment. But faith is principally assimilated through contact with people whose daily life bears witness to it. Christian faith, in fact, is born and grows inside a community.”

Senior Retreat - Class of 2011
One-hundred fifty-nine SPX seniors participated in their annual class retreat,
“SEARCH”, on February 15-17, 2011. The retreat experience is conducted annually
by the SPX office for Campus Ministry at Camp for All in Burton, Texas. The two-night, two-and-a-half day retreat experience known as The SEARCH Retreat
was created and designed especially for seniors and explores faith themes
of searching: The search for who we are; the search or God; the search
for God’s purpose in our lives; and the search for healing. The retreat
includes numerous community building experiences, personal reflection time,
common prayer and worship, witness talks given by faculty and staff members,
organized recreation, of course great food, and small group communities and
sharing discussions. Senior Matt Schick had this to say about his retreat
experience: “I liked senior retreat because we were able to forget about
homework and practices and just be with one another as a whole class. I was
able to be with friends and people I know, but don’t usually get to chill with
at school because I have so much going on. The retreat talks also made me think
about what’s going on in my life right now and about God in my life. It was
definitely a fun retreat and even though I didn’t get a lot of sleep, I really,
really liked it. It seems like every year our class retreats just get better
and better.”
“The retreats offered at SPX are each designed
to help individuals grow in their own personal faith journey and spiritual
walk. Our commitment to our spiritual life as a Dominican Catholic school is
evident in many ways, and especially in the design and emphasis of our
excellent retreat ministry.” said Patrick Spedale, director of The Office for
Campus Ministry at St. Pius X High School since 1996. “It’s a firm commitment
on our part as a school to provide opportunities for an entire class to retreat
together during the school year and to dedicate time to cultivate the spiritual
life our community members. Retreats a considered co-curricular in our
educational process and that’s just one many reasons we see ourselves as a
mission driven school community.” All SPX students as well as faculty/staff
participate in an annual retreat experience. The faculty/staff,
freshmen/women and sophomores all participate in a day of reflection while
juniors participate in an overnight retreat experience. Seniors participate in
a two night, two and a half day retreat experience.
